Can the same pump model be used for a deep-well and a dug well?

Yes. In both cases, the same type of pump can be used. The selection of the device depends on the required parameters of the well and the installation. In the case of a dug well, where its diameter is much larger than that of a classic deep well, it is practically always necessary to use an accelerating jacket to optimize cooling conditions (different motor manufacturers require different minimum motor flow rate. On average, it varies from 0.1 to 0.2 m/s). Another issue is whether the dynamic water table in the dug well will allow the installation of a deep-well pump (insufficient "thickness" of the water layer in the well - the distance from the bottom to the water table). There is also a design of submersible, multi-stage pumps that allow for installation in a dug well, without the need for a special acceleration jacket and with an unfavorable position of the dynamic mirror. The pumps have a suction body at the bottom.

Should every well have a deep-well pump?

If the location of the dynamic water table in the well and the connection conditions allow, you can use, for example, a self-priming pump

Self-priming pumps SK

Can more than one pump be used in one well for several consumers?

Yes, if the parameters of the well (capacity, diameter, location of the dynamic water mirror) allow it. It is not possible to pump at a higher total capacity than the measured operating capacity of the well.

What is the rule of thumb for matching pump diameter to well diameter?

The diameter of the well must be so much larger than the diameter of the deep-well pumps to be installed that the pump can be freely installed at the required depth. As a general rule of thumb, the well should have an inner diameter about 10% larger than the outer, maximum diameter of the pump unit. Do not confuse the nominal diameter of the well pipe with its inner diameter.

What other parameters of the well and customer needs should be considered when selecting a deep-well pump?

When selecting a deep-well pump, it is necessary to pay attention to two groups of parameters: the source (well) and the parameters of the recipient. Parameters of the well:
  • static mirror position (the stabilized water level in the well when no water is being pumped),
  • operating capacity (that is, the maximum capacity with which water can be pumped from the well),
  • depression (the value that determines the descent of the water table in the well, from the level of the static mirror, during pumping, this parameter is the greater the greater the efficiency with which the pump operates),
  • internal diameter of the well,
All this information can be obtained during test pumping conducted by the Well Contractor. If the well exists such a service (test pumping) can be ordered from a well company. Parameters of the recipient:
  • water demand,
  • The required pressure in the fed system,

Does water composition/quality affect pump selection and operation?

The chemical composition of the water to be pumped determines the choice of the appropriate material design of the pump and its mode of operation (a different pump will be for fresh raw water, another for brine and another for mineral water). With a large amount of iron and manganese in raw well water, it may be necessary to periodically remove the pump from the well and remove deposits from the motor casing. Iron and manganese deposits can cause engine damage due to reduced heat exchange with the environment. The frequency of these treatments depends on the content of iron and manganese in the water. This should, unfortunately, be determined experimentally or based on the opinion of local wellsmen.

Do the type and parameters of a deep-well pump determine the type of water system in any way?

It is not the type of pump that is to determine the parameters of the water system. It is the fed installation that determines the type of pump selected / used. A poorly selected pump can affect the fed installation (water hammer, exceeding the permissible pressure of the fittings and hydrophore used).

When to choose a single-stage pump and when to choose a multi-stage pump?

The use of a single-stage or three-stage motor largely depends on the capabilities of the supplying electrical system. Generally, single-phase pumps are offered up to a power rating of 2.20 kW. Three-stage motors have a higher starting torque and a lower starting current value. However, a single-stage motor is not as sensitive to interference from the power supply. A three-stage motor requires better protection than a single-stage motor, which in turn must be equipped with a starting capacitor (the first thing to fail).

What do we gain by choosing deep-well pumps with a frequency converter?

The use of frequency converters to regulate the parameters of deep-well pumps makes it possible to maintain virtually constant pressure in the fed system, nullifies completely the effect of hydraulic shock generated by switching on / off the pump. However, it should be remembered that the use of a frequency converter is limited by the shape and course of the characteristics of the pump used. Not always the use of a frequency converter completely eliminates the need for a classic hydrophore tank. Especially in conditions of minimal water intake (e.g., bottom flush, watering can, kettle). Any such intake, without the use of a hydrophore tank, activates the pump.

Is it necessary to install a hydrophore tank?

It all depends on the Facility being supplied. It is different for a residential building characterized by high variability in water demand, and different for an irrigation system, where the operating point of the pump is practically constant. The hydrophore tank is a reservoir of pressurized water, it allows to limit the number of deep-well pumps' engagements. The hydrophore tank protects pressure switches, pressure switches and pressure transducers from the effects and consequences of the hydraulic shock generated in the pump discharge system.

What are the consequences of a poorly sized hydropower tank?

The main consequence of a poorly sized (implicitly - too small) deep-well pump is that it often turns on. This translates into increased energy consumption and faster wear of the pump.

What components of the connection system are critical to the proper operation of a deep-well pump system?

To such a generally formulated question , can be answered just as generally. All components of the connection system are crucial for the proper functioning of the system with deep-well pumps. In a correctly constructed installation there are no unnecessary elements. The basic principle is to optimize the size (diameters) of the connection installation, that is, to use such diameters of fittings that they pose the lowest possible resistance to flow. The flow velocity in pipelines should not exceed 2.0 m/s. Do not look for savings "on the diameter" of the fittings and pipelines used, as well as the quality of the fittings (check valves , shut-off valves).

Does the operation of a deep-well pump depend on the season and temperature conditions?

In general, the operation of a deep-well pump does not depend on the season and air temperature. Although there are wells where the level of the static water table in the well and the size of the depression can depend on the season. In winter and spring, the water table is higher, while in summer and autumn it is lower and the depression is larger. It depends on hydrogeological conditions . In this case, you should trust the Well Contractor, who should know the local hydrogeological conditions. And to propose the depth of the pump installation.

How to know a good quality pump? What to pay attention to when choosing a specific model?

There are no unambiguous characteristics by which to recognize a good quality deep-well pump. One should be guided by the manufacturer's / bidder's brand name and warranty terms (the bidder's willingness to bear responsibility). Often a very good product poorly selected and incorrectly operated will fail faster than a product of average quality selected correctly and operated in accordance with the Operating Instructions.

What affects the energy efficiency of a deep-well pump?

The primary indicator of the energy efficiency of deep-well pumps is their efficiency. Not without influence is the way the pump is selected to suit the individual conditions of the intake and the plant being fed. A poorly selected pump will not work efficiently.

What is the life expectancy of a deep-well pump?

The lifespan of a deep-well pump operating under optimal conditions, depending on size and power, ranges from 5,000 to 30,000 operating hours. In reality, these theoretical resourses are shorter because the conditions under which the pumps are operated are not optimal.

How often should a deep-well pump be inspected/serviced?

Deep-well pumps are maintenance-free. They do not require special maintenance. Periodic removal of a deep-well pump from a well may be due to the need to clean iron and manganese deposits deposited on the surface of the motor and in the suction basket area. In this case, it is enough to effectively clean the outside of the pump with a pressure washer without dismantling it.

There is also no strictly defined service life. Practically, it is enough to measure and record the parameters of the pump at the time of its first start-up and then periodically (e.g., once a year) carry out measurements and compare them with the original ones (time of filling the hydrophore tank, current, pressures obtained). If these parameters deviate from the original ones by 10% (this is a cumulative process), you should already consider the possibility of building the pump from the well and undertake maintenance work (after eliminating other factors that can affect the work of the pump, for example : connection fittings or / and changing hydrogeological conditions).
