Genesis of deep-well pumps production in Poland
The production of deep-well pumps in Grudziądz, in a factory founded in 1862 by Jozef Herzfeld and Karol Victorius, with the later name of Iron Foundry – Enameling and Mechanical Works Grudziądz, began in 1937 under a license purchased from Klein, Schanzlin & Becker, (Franhenthal/ Pfalz). After the war, in 1947/48, the production of deep-well pumps was launched at the renamed factory as Pomorska Odlewanie i Enaliernia POiE Grudziądz.

Type G pumps
In the plant, rebuilt from the destruction, in the late 1940s, in cooperation with national design offices, documentation of six sizes of deep-well pumps was developed : G80B, G80A, G100B, G10A, G125B, G125A. Production of these pumps began in 1950. At the same time, construction and technological work on SGM electric motors for their propulsion was carried out at the Karkonosze Electric Machinery Works in Piechowice. The work was completed in 1950 with the implementation into production of motors with diameters: 240, 270 and 320 mm. Reducing the diameter of the motors to 6 and 8 inches allowed the implementation of the G60 pump sizes developed in the following years in 1962 and the G40 in 1965.
Initially, deep-well pumps were manufactured in a single material version of gray cast iron. In the 1960s, an export version of pumps with impellers made of silicon brass MK80 was implemented into production. After deep-well pumps began to be exported to the USSR, a special execution with cast-iron impellers with flow channels coated with vitreous enamel was implemented in production. This improved surface smoothness and operational indicators including erosion resistance.
The production of deep-well pumps developed rapidly due to the needs arising from the reconstruction of the country from war damage, a wide range of water supply investments and the drainage needs of the emerging open-pit mines: sulfur in Machow near Tarnobrzeg, lignite in Konin and Belchatow, and growing exports.
In the late 1960s, as a result of the work of foundry technologists, the casting of deep-well pumps impellers using the Shaw’a method was implemented. The method, unique in the country, allowed the production of spatial impellers with very low roughness.
In 1966, extensive work began on upgrading the basic types of pumps produced at the factory, including deep-well pumps. The deep-well pump of the new series, developed in 1970 in the factory's design office, had the following parameters: Q up to 10,000 dm3/min, H up to 350 m, well fi up to 300 mm. The pump corresponded to the parameters of pumps from foreign companies and often exceeded them.
In 1960/70, exports of deep-well pumps to Mediterranean countries developed: Greece, Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, Italy, Spain through CHZ Polimer-Cekop in Warsaw and Centrozap in Katowice.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Hydro-Vacuum's pump production accounted for 40% of domestic production of total pumps, including 100% of deep-well pumps. New designs of deep-well pumps of the GB-0, GB-1, GB-2 types, high-performance diagonal deep-well pumps of the GD type, among others, for open-pit mines, and GF pumps with a capacity of 7,000 dm3/min were put into production.

In April 1986, the number of deep-well pumps produced in the postwar period approached half a million. In the 1990s, the G-pump series was expanded and supplemented with new types with Q up to 420 m3/h and H up to 700 m, in selected pump sizes, which was made possible by access to deep-well pumps engines with an extended power range. Products constantly modernized were not inferior in technical parameters and operational indicators to those of the competition.
As a confirmation of the high quality of the deep-well pumps produced, Hydro-Vacuum S.A. was awarded the ISO 9001 certificate in 1994 (as the second company in Poland).

Innovation the domain of deep-well pumps production at Hydro-Vacuum S.A.
The years 2000-2010 saw further development of new designs. Among others, a series of types of deep-well pumps type GCA.8, GCA.7, GCA.6, GCA.5, GCA.3 with Q up to 175 m3/h and H up to 600 m characterized by higher energy efficiency and innovative design solutions are created. Some of them are protected by patents, for others proceedings for obtaining European patents or industrial designs are implemented. R&D work on the new design of the GCA.5 and GCA.3 pumps was carried out by employees of the R&D Department of Hydro-Vacuum S.A. in cooperation with scientists of the Gdansk University of Technology. The flow system was optimized using NUMECA and FLUENT flow analysis programs. As a consequence of the work carried out, the new pumping unit achieved high efficiency over the entire range of operating capacity. Implemented into the production processes of modern machinery, e.g. fully automated casting line, amine core production line, numerically controlled machines for machining improves the smoothness and accuracy of the design-optimized hydraulic channels, which gives customers energy savings during the operation of the pumps. Confirmation of the innovativeness of the GCA.5 pump is the receipt of the Grand Prix at the WOD-KAN 2009 trade fair and an Honorable Mention at the TIWS 2009 trade fair in Kielce.
The subject of current research work is GDC-type pumps. The aim of the project, which is co-financed by the European Union, is to develop a new geometry for a high-performance hydraulic system.
Hydro-Vacuum S.A.'s range of deep-well pumps is very wide. It includes pumps from 4” to 14”. Numerous material executions allow for a multitude of applications. The cooperation of the factory's own Research and Development Department with scientists of the Gdansk and Wroclaw Universities of Technology allows us to offer customers products corresponding to the world technical level.
The development of the Research and Development Department is one of Hydro-Vacuum S.A.'s priorities. Currently, it employs 46 employees, including people with the titles of professors and doctors of technical sciences. At their disposal are state-of-the-art computer equipment and specialized software to support design processes, including ANSYS-CFD. Over the past 3 years, the Research and Development Department has developed and put into production 25 types of products in the field of pumps and pumping systems. Hydro-Vacuum S.A.'s innovative activities have been noted for several years at the top of the ranking of Polish innovative companies conducted by the daily „Rzeczpospolita”.

In 2009–2010, Hydro-Vacuum S.A. allocated about PLN 16 million for development and capacity expansion. Whereas in 2011 - 2012 it will allocate another more than PLN 6 million just for research and development.
Many years of experience in the development of deep-well pumps, combined with the operating practice of hundreds of thousands of users in the country and around the world, make it possible to constantly improve the technical parameters of the pumps and adapt them to the individual needs reported by the operators. Hydro-Vacuum S.A. treats the users of its pumps as partners whose comments on the quality and technical parameters of the pumps influence the directions of research and development work. The company is very flexible in its efforts to meet the expectations of its customers and often prepares pumps in special designs for them.
The high quality of the deep-well pumps produced, combined with very good technical parameters, has allowed Hydro-Vacuum S.A. to maintain its position as a leading supplier of deep-well pumps in Poland, even after the Polish market has been widely opened to foreign suppliers, and the export of these pumps has developed very dynamically.
